Professional experience

Professor Ahmed El‑Missiry is a consultant psychiatrist with a particular interest in General and Addiction Psychiatry. He works as an Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist at Nightingale Hospital alongside his work in the Crisis and Home Treatment Team and personality disorder services in North London. Previously, Professor El‑Missiry oversaw the largest drug and alcohol detoxification unit in Southeast England.

Professor El‑Missiry completed his training in the UK at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College and became a member of Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2004 before being elected as a fellow by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2020. He completed his international addiction medicine competence degree in 2005 and was elected as a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2017.

He is a professor of psychiatry at the World Health Organisation Collaborative Centre for Training and Research and served as the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Regional Representative in Addiction from 2010 until 2022.

Personal statement

Professor El‑Missiry has a particular interest in General and Addiction Psychiatry, especially the relationship between substance misuse, mental illness and offending behaviour. He has particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of depression, anxiety disorder, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, psychosis, personality disorders, addictions, and crisis intervention for acute and severe mental illness.

Professor El‑Missiry is well-published, with more than 45 peer reviewed articles in different areas of psychiatry. He received the EPA 2005 Award for General Edification, Enlightenment and Continuity of Psychiatric Sciences with Other Disciplines
