Professional experience

Dr Manuel Toren began his career in the charitable sector as an Integrative Psychotherapist in 2010. During this time, he worked with organisations such as Redbridge Alcohol Service, Mind in Tower Hamlets & Newham, and Jobs in Mind—a specialised service designed to help individuals suffering from psychosis acquire job skills and re-enter the workforce while also accessing psychodynamic psychotherapy.

In 2017, Manuel transitioned to the NHS, taking on the role of a Cognitive-Behavioural Therapist at Hertfordshire University Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He spent five years there before moving on to work as a locum across a range of NHS mental health trusts. In 2024, Manuel began his work with Nightingale Hospital, continuing to make a significant impact in the field of mental health.

Personal statement

Manuel is an Integrative Psychotherapist and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist who finds happiness in helping people regain their footing and achieve their fullest potential. His primary goal is to provide clients with the tools they need to be their best and make the most of their lives.

He began his clinical career in 2011, starting with mental health charities before transitioning to work in both the public and private health sectors in 2017, where he continues to practice today. In addition, he has been running a private practice since 2016, further expanding his ability to support individuals in their mental health journey.

Manuel is highly experienced in treating a range of mental health conditions, including panic disorder, PTSD, OCD, depression, anxiety disorders (such as social anxiety, health anxiety, phobias, body dysmorphia, and generalised anxiety), as well as issues like low self-esteem, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, and professional challenges. He specialises in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related conditions, such as health anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and emetophobia.

As an integrative psychotherapist, Manuel combines psychoanalytic, existential, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioural approaches to therapy. He emphasises a person-centred therapeutic stance that fosters trust, respect, and deeper therapeutic work, focusing on the individual’s potential for growth.

Additional information about research, publications and interests

Manuel has a special interest in memory reconsolidation and its role in mental health disorders, using it as a treatment tool to help address various psychological challenges. He is also particularly focused on medically unexplained conditions such as IBS, ME, and fibromyalgia, and has conducted research in these areas to better understand and support individuals affected by these conditions.
