Treatment for alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction treatment at Nightingale Hospital is underpinned by an integrative approach combining motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal group therapy, experiential therapy and 12-step facilitation. We place a strong emphasis on relapse prevention, psychoeducation, group therapy, the implementation of positive coping strategies and family involvement in treatment. In addition to this, a key part of our comprehensive assessment is the identification of significant traumas that have played a role in causing or maintaining addictive behaviours. Our addiction treatment is based on a comprehensive therapeutic framework of biopsychosocial care with the support of some of the UK’s leading addiction specialists. All our addiction treatment offerings are based on current clinical evidence and in line with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines

Alcohol addiction treatment can be provided via three different streams:

Inpatient alcohol addiction treatment

Our inpatient addiction programmes are designed to provide you with a ‘circuit breaker’ which supports you with the tools to create long-lasting change and recovery. Our inpatient programmes are broken down into two different modalities, the 28-day addiction treatment rehabilitation programme and the 7-10-day detox programme. Our addiction therapists and consultant psychiatrists specialising in addiction will go through the options with you and provide a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, circumstances, and history.

These provide an overview of each of the inpatient programmes, an example therapy timetable to understand what your day-to-day might look like and introduce you to the team who will be supporting you.

Through therapy, education on addiction and alternative approaches we aim to give you the knowledge and coping skills for living without the aid of addictive substances or behaviours. The addiction treatment programme also has a strong focus on relapse prevention and offers an introduction to fellowship groups such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous), CA (Cocaine Anonymous), MA (Marijuana Anonymous) and GA (Gamblers Anonymous) which are incredibly powerful groups for long-term recovery.

Day patient and outpatient alcohol addiction treatment

We understand that addiction recovery is a daily decision which is why we provide support beyond just an inpatient setting. Our day therapy programme and outpatient 1:1 therapy may be accessed without accessing inpatient treatment but in many cases, individuals will access these services after first completing the 28-day addiction treatment rehabilitation programme or 7-10-day detox.

Why do patients choose Nightingale for alcohol addiction treatment?

Why do patients choose Nightingale for addiction treatment?

  • Expertly managed detoxes: Addiction treatment within a hospital setting enables us to expertly care for patients of all acuity levels and complexity, including patients with a dual diagnosis. As a hospital, Nightingale provides all patients with 24/7 support. Our multidisciplinary team are fully trained to undertake complex medical detoxification and to support patients in managing withdrawal symptoms.
  • Trained addiction specialists: Our addiction treatment team consists of leading consultant psychiatrists, nurses and therapists who are all specially trained in addiction. They are supported by clinical and counselling psychologists, trauma therapists, psychotherapists and CBT therapists, ensuring that we deliver patient-tailored treatments.
  • Management of co-existing conditions: Our team is highly experienced in supporting patients who may be at risk of cross-addicting to unhealthy behaviours such as exercise, relationships, gambling, sex, gaming, technology usage or other compulsive behaviours. We are also expertly placed to treat co-existing conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression or PTSD within our hospital. Your assessment with a consultant psychiatrist will consider these co-existing conditions and what additional support or further treatment should be put in place to address them.
  • Intensive therapy programme: Addiction treatment at Nightingale Hospital is based on a comprehensive therapeutic framework of biopsychosocial care and evidence-based therapies to help you live a life free from active addiction. These therapies include an introduction to the principles and practices of fellowship groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), cognitive behavioural therapy to identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviours associated with addiction, motivational interviewing to explore ambivalence about change and cultivate intrinsic motivation for recovery, interpersonal group therapy to explore relational dynamics and receive support from peers who understand your struggles and family therapy.
  • Support throughout the recovery journey: We recognise that intensive addiction treatment, whether that be a detox or 28-day therapy programme, is only the beginning of the recovery journey. We provide free weekly aftercare support groups for one year following the conclusion of inpatient treatment and/or day therapy programmes which are facilitated on Zoom with one of our addiction specialists. These aftercare groups are designed to support the transition back to your normal day-to-day life and address the difficulties that can arise during this time. Alongside these aftercare groups, we encourage our patients to continue onto secondary care, attend fellowship groups and engage in outpatient 1:1 therapy.
