Last year, the Oxford English Dictionary named ‘selfie’ word of the year after research showed its frequency of use had soared 17,000 per cent in 12 months.

Commenting on the links between technology addiction and other mental health issues, our lead consultant psychiatrist for Technology Addiction here at Nightingale Hospital London, Dr Richard Graham said, “Anyone can develop an addiction to technology or a device but often it is more complicated. Compulsions can form as a result of other issues. Some teenagers become compelled to take selfies on their phones but patients with anorexia may equally become obsessed with using a weight loss app or an exercise app. It’s an issue of control, which is made much easier by having this kind of technology at your fingertips.”
